There are lots of benefits in living a happier life, for example it can give you the drive to improve or change your life. It can make you think clearly, be more productive during the day and it’s good for your mental health.

So how to be happier or stop feeling sad?

Don’t play the victim and be a blamer

Most people blame others and the things around them, because they don’t want to take responsibility for their actions and accept that they need to change. Each time we blame others, we automatically activate our victim mentality. This led to so many relationship failures, friendship and family fallouts and even suicides.

The most common things people blame are:

1. The evil ex: My ex is the reason I’m like this.

2. The childhood: My upbringing is what made me aggressive, negative and the cause of over eating.

3. The job: Usually people have the time to go to bars and restaurants, visit friends or spend hours on the phone, watch the game or an entire series on Netflix but because of their jobs they don’t have time to improve their lives.

4. The government: The government is holding me back from making moves.

5. The kids: Having children takes up my entire day so I don’t have time and I feel tired.

6. Satan: It wasn’t my fault that was the work of the devil.

7. Blame it on the alcohol: I was drunk when it happened it wasn't my fault, I don't even remember.

8. Social media: Is addictive, I’m doing little throughout the day because of it.

Studies show that people who take responsibility for their actions are much happier than those who don’t. This is because only when you accept the blame, you can then look for ways to improve yourself and turn your life around.

Live a healthy lifestyle

We know when you’re feeling sad or depressed, after a relationship breakup or bereavement it’s easy to over eat and live an unhealthy lifestyle. Although the food tastes good it could lead to weight gain and health issues, which will make you feel even more sad. 

Have a well balanced diet but make it a lifestyle, because it will stay with you forever. Research shows that healthy choices about your diet can improve your mood, make you feel positive about yourself and emotionally stronger.

Exercise regularly

When you say exercise many people think of the gym, HIIT cardio or running. However, you can even do moderate exercises such as:

  • Brisk walking: A brisk walk is faster than a stroll. When walking briskly you can still have a conversation with someone but you can’t sing because of the pace. This burns calories which in turn burns fat.

  • Swimming: Swimming burns lots of calories and it also tones your muscles and builds strength.

  • Bike riding: Reduce your body fat, strengthen your bones and increase your cardiovascular fitness.

  • Dancing: Helps you burn calories and reduce body fat without even knowing

All of the above exercises are light and release chemicals in your brain that lift your mood. It can help you sleep better, have more energy and keep your heart healthy. If you can mix gym workouts even better. However, choose an exercise that you enjoy. Adults should aim for 150 minutes a week minimum that is 21.4 minutes a day.

Have a daily routine

Yes, having a daily routine makes you feel happier, productive and positive than someone who just lives according to whatever the day brings. 

The key to our CEO Tirule Roberts’ success is having a routine. If you search the internet you will find a lot of successful people have a daily routine. No successful person lives according to whatever the day brings.

The first and most important routine is to make your bed and tidy your room every morning. Do not leave your room messy, with a dirty mug or a glass on the side of your bed or clothes on the floor. People who make their beds in the morning and keep their rooms tidy, start their day in a better mood, are more productive and more positive than people who roll out of bed without feeling bothered to do so.

Additional routines could be

  • Have a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep daily.

  • Wake up early, don’t be someone who snoozes the alarm or sets multi alarms to wake up.

  • Learn something new: When you work towards learning something new it helps your knowledge, builds your confidence and makes you feel happier so explore your passion.

  • Go for a walk even if it’s just for 30 minutes.

  • Plan your next day for example things that you need to get done.

  • Make your own lunch for work rather than buying it at work, you will save money and be healthier.

  • Exercise in the morning, it will make you feel refreshed and energised for the day ahead.

  • Listen to uplifting music or motivational speakers.

  • Stay Hydrated throughout the day.

Stop negative thinking

You need to first identify the negative beliefs you have about yourself. For example this ambition is too hard so I might as well forget it, or I don’t have the willpower to wake up every morning and exercise.

Make a list of your negative thoughts as you get them, write them on a piece of paper or in your phone notes. Challenge each negative thought, just because you think a certain way of yourself doesn’t make it true.

Reduce your alcohol intake and drink water regularly

We know when times are hard, it's tempting to drink alcohol because it "numbs" painful feelings. But it can exaggerate some feelings and make you feel angry or aggressive. It can also make you feel more depressed.

The benefits of drinking water are endless, but we will focus on how it improves your mood. Dehydration can cause your mood to change even mild dehydration for example feeling of tiredness, negative attitude and more. However, drinking water regularly throughout the day can improve your mood, make you feel refreshed, productive and flushes out harmful toxins. 

Talk more

If you have a partner, have pillow talk at night regularly. It is relaxing, intimate and good for bonding.

It’s good to communicate, whether it's with a friend, family member or counsellor. Talking things through helps to release tension, instead of keeping it inside.
